Addressing Global Food, Energy & Cost of Living Crises: Role of SP in strengthening FS’ resilience

Описание: Over the past two years, the ability of countries and people to deal with adversity has been eroding. While conflict is still the main driver of hunger, global fuel and fertilizer prices have climbed even faster than food prices, resulting in turn in increased farmers’ production costs, higher food prices, and lower farm yields. This contributes to the creation of a severe vicious cycle as higher prices erode living standards and household finances, pressure interest rates, devalue currencies, and foster social instability, to mention some of the potential cascading effects. The prevalence of chronic hunger around the world further suggests that food systems – the networks that are needed to produce and transform food and ensure its accessibility to consumers – are not meeting the needs of large sections of society in this critical period. Social protection plays an instrumental role in responding to and mitigating the impacts of covariate shocks, as well as in strengthening the resilience of food systems. In the face of the current ‘polycrisis’, this webinar aimed to discuss how social protection can mitigate its impact on the poor and vulnerable and prevent its aggravation. Particularly, the session identified and analyzed social protections’ contributions and challenges to deliver food security, nutrition, and livelihood outcomes across the food system ‘from farm to fork’.
