Nature may offer interesting alternatives to protect people and their environment:
Dikes are getting bigger and more expensive in the fight against the impact of water. Vegetation seems to bring some relief regarding the damping of the waves, but so far, this natural system has not been considered a valid part of the damping... This might change, due to the research of Deltares, NIOZ and TU Delft about the wave damping effect of wooden vegetation. Could this result in cheaper and more ecological dikes?
A large scale experiment in the Delta flume (with a real forest and real intense waves) was a good representation of reality, but was very expensive and cumbersome to perform. Small scale tests are cheaper, but don’t completely resemble reality. By precisely replicating the large scale Delta flume test in small scale flumes, scale effects can be found. Hereby previous small scale tests can be validated and (computer) models to predict the wave damping properties of forests can be made.
