Описание: If you’re planning for retirement in Canada, or helping someone who is, understanding OAS is non-negotiable. The average Canadian spends 20+ years in retirement, and the decisions you make today can significantly affect how much income you receive later.

OAS is a taxable monthly pension paid to eligible seniors in Canada, based on how long you've lived in the country after age 18. Unlike CPP, you don’t need to have worked or paid into it to qualify. Most seniors receive OAS automatically once they file taxes.

Who is Eligible?
✔ Age 65+ (or 60–64 for survivor allowance)
✔ Canadian citizen or legal resident at application
✔ Must have lived in Canada at least 10 years after age 18
✔ Full benefits typically require 40 years of residency

OAS is income-tested. For 2025, the clawback starts when income exceeds $93,454 and is fully clawed back at around $152,062 (65–74 age group).

If you expect to live past 82, delaying OAS can make sense. Every month you defer after 65 increases payments by +0.6%, up to +36%.

If you’ve lived in Canada for 20+ years after age 18, you may still receive OAS even outside the country.

Quick Stats
• 95% of seniors receive OAS
• Deferring to age 70 can increase benefits by 36%
• OAS and GIS work together to support low-income seniors
• OAS is not based on contributions, only residency and income

As Canadians, we spend decades working and building lives, so making informed decisions about the benefits you’re entitled to can make retirement more secure, flexible, and financially confident.
