This is part 1 of Alan Corbiere's presentation for the Anishinaabemowin Revival Program on the seven Anishinaabe Clans around Manitoulin Island, northern Michigan and the north shore of Lake Huron (Crane, Loon, Fish, Martin, Deer, Bird, and Turtle) delivered at the Ojibwe Cultural Foundation on February 12, 2014.
Corbiere explains that Anishinaabe people track their bloodlines through their mothers and their clan membership through their fathers. People's names do not necessarily link them to a specific clan. Traditionally, in the Anishinaabe kinship system, clan membership took precedence over individual identity, and clan members cared for each other even if they had previously been separated by distance. Corbiere argues that clan identity is now being subsumed by individual identity.
