Lambourn, was originally started by Ian Harrison around 1979. Published in MRJ 23 in 1988. Now runs as GWR late 1930’s.
Sold on to Alan Ketley who modified it by adding an additional board to the scenic side in between the fiddle yard and the station approach. This was to help the visual look by preventing locos, during shunting, disappearing "off stage". He also increased the length of the station board to include the weigh bridge, office and station approach. Several other detail items have been changed and also the layout has been changed to allow the use of sprat and winkle couplings. This has entailed installation from under the baseboards as the magnets need to be under the sleepers, but it was done to prevent disturbing the existing trackwork.
The fiddle yard was also replaced with a turntable to prevent any stock from being handled. The boards have remained in this condition with the exception of permanently joining the last two scenic boards, to create one, and creating an infill piece to blend the boards together.
As the layout is 40 years old, it was originally designed for DC control, DCC wasn’t even heard of then. As such it has been partially rewired and now has the ability to be used with either system, allowing visiting locos to be used.
The original H and M point and signal operation remains but with a new control panel to replace the electric pencil system with a small lever frame and an increased capacity CPU to ensure positive throwing of points. Section switches have been removed, but main wiring left in place to help in fault finding.
Scenically the whole layout has been refreshed as colours over time tend to fade. The original layout has been updated with lineside fencing and additional scenic items and repairs to buildings and structures, mainly due to ageing of materials and failure of glues.
