June 1944. The old castle of La Roche-Guyon sat high above the Seine River in France. Its stone walls had stood for hundreds of years. Kings and knights had once walked its halls. But on this night, the castle belonged to one of Germany's most famous soldiers. Field Marshal Erwin Rommel sat alone at a wooden desk. The room around him was grand but felt cold. Tapestries hung on the walls. Candles flickered in the darkness. Outside, the distant thunder of artillery had not stopped for three days. The Allied invasion had begun, and everything Rommel had built was now being tested.
