A much requested style of lick and one I rarely place as a #lickfriday lesson. Not sure why I don't do more of this type of lick to be honest. They are so good to learn and use too. They can make a player sound so much better than the notes that are used as the flavours come from the technique, phrasing and slurs that are used. You only have to listen to Something Like Olivia or Gravity, both by John Mayer to hear how an emotional lick can tell so much more than a bunch of notes alone. It's easy to play the notes but to try and capture the "salt and pepper" vibe you need is a whole different ball park.
Within this lick you can also capture an element of slide guitar sounds without having the slide. This part is the blues scale slide in and back out. Derek trucks is a beast when it come this this type of sound but obviously he mainly uses slide, so this is well worth learning just for that particular section alone.
Give it a go and remember to have a nice reverb/delay or both to tail off the notes perfectly.
