ঈদ উল ফিতরের ‘ঈদ' শব্দটি এসেছে আরবি শব্দ ‘আউদ' থেকে যার অর্থ উৎসব যা বারবার ফিরে আসে। আর 'ফিতর' এসেছে আরবি 'ফিতরা’ শব্দ থেকে যার অর্থ ভেঙে দেওয়া। অর্থাৎ ঈদ উল ফিতর হল রোজা ভাঙ্গার আনন্দের দিন বা উৎসব যা পুনরায় ফিরে আসে। তবে ঈদের সামাজিক অর্থ সর্বজনীন ধর্মীয় উৎসব।ঈদ চালু হয় যেভাবে

মহানবী হযরত মোহাম্মদ (সা.) মক্কা থেকে মদিনায় হিজরত করার পর ঈদ পালনের রীতিনীতি শুরু হয়। মুসলমানরা প্রথম ঈদুল ফিতরের নামাজ আদায় করে হিজরি ২য় সনে। মাসের শেষের কোন একটি দিনে দিনটি পালন করা হয়। এদিন নবী মোহাম্মদ (সা:) ছোট-বড় সবার সঙ্গে ঈদ আনন্দের সময় কাটাতেন। মদিনার ছোট ছোট শিশু-কিশোরদের সঙ্গে বিশ্বনবী মোহাম্মদ (সা.) ঈদ আনন্দ শেয়ার করতেন। আর এভাবেই শুরু হয় ঈদ৷
