Welcome to early spring field work in Central Illinois! On February 28, 2026, I took the drone up to capture Sunrise FS hard at work applying anhydrous ammonia just outside of Pesotum, IL. Watch as this massive John Deere 9RX 590 track tractor effortlessly pulls a Case IH Nutri-Placer 940 toolbar and twin nurse tanks across the field.
Equipment Spotlight:
The John Deere 9RX 590 boasts a massive 13.6L JD14 engine putting out 590 rated horsepower, giving it incredible pulling power and high flotation across the soil. It's paired with the Case IH Nutri-Placer 940, a commercial-grade toolbar designed for high-speed, precise nutrient management with minimal soil disturbance.
Why do farmers apply Anhydrous Ammonia (NH3)?
Anhydrous ammonia is one of the most efficient and widely used sources of nitrogen fertilizer in agriculture. Composed of 82% nitrogen, it is injected directly into the soil as a pressurized liquid, which immediately converts to a gas and binds with soil moisture. Nitrogen is a crucial nutrient for plant growth—especially for high-yielding crops like corn. By applying it before planting, farmers ensure the soil has a rich, readily available supply of nutrients to feed the crops throughout the growing season, maximizing yield potential.
