Forging a steel coat rack that started as nothing more than an idea that wouldn’t leave me alone. Four hand forged hooks, each twisted and finished with a curl, mounted to a quarter inch steel bar that I peened by hand and finished with forged ram horns on the ends. Everything pulled together with solid brass rivets.
This was a project I really got into. I wanted something with a more traditional blacksmithing feel, something that pushed my skills a little further. It was my first time forging ram horns, and like most first attempts, it took patience and commitment to see it through. I’m proud of how it turned out. The rack is heavy duty, rock solid, and full of character. It can hold coats, hats, tools, whatever you throw at it, and it will do it for decades.
That’s the thing about craft. Sometimes you don’t need a reason or a plan. Sometimes an idea shows up, and the only thing to do is follow it. You learn by doing. You grow by pushing past what you’ve already mastered. Each project becomes a conversation between who you were and who you’re becoming.
That’s Roots & Anvil. Build what calls to you. Put in the work. Let the process shape you as much as the steel.
