The MISSOURI Nobody Talks About Anymore - Discover the forgotten Missouri when Kansas City was livestock capital of America, St. Louis was the nation's fourth-largest city, and the Missouri and Mississippi rivers carried more freight than interstate highways would.
Before political battleground status and tourist attractions, Missouri was genuinely the crossroads of America. Kansas City stockyards covering hundreds of acres employing thousands processing cattle and hogs from Great Plains with Swift and Armour packing plants, St. Louis population over 850,000 in 1950 as major industrial center with Anheuser-Busch brewery and McDonnell Aircraft building fighter jets, Missouri and Mississippi rivers as transportation highways with towboats pushing grain and coal barges, family farms 160-320 acres growing corn and soybeans with county fairs and 4-H clubs connecting rural communities, small towns like Sedalia, Hannibal, and Cape Girardeau thriving as regional centers, lead mines around Park Hills and zinc mines around Joplin making Missouri the nation's largest lead producer, Missouri State Fair in Sedalia celebrating agricultural heritage, Harry Truman representing practical unpretentious political tradition, and Kansas City jazz and barbecue traditions. Then agriculture mechanized, stockyards closed in 1990s, St. Louis declined from 4th largest to out of top ten, and rivers became less important as transportation shifted to trucks.
