Recorded at home in Louisville, KY.
In 2017, I was fortunate to visit Guangxi China with a group of music students from the Hamburg Hochschule für Musik und Theater, and the Shanghai Conservatory of Music to experience regional music being played by local musicians. The rain in this area creates a striking landscape of extremely steep green mountains, and flowing rivers below. We visited a cave with a shrine built inside it, where sounds of worship mingled with sounds of water. It was exciting and memorable to learn and perform some of the music I was hearing in a spontaneous quartet of friends majoring in Chinese instrumental performance. Our group comprised erhu, violin, pipa, and ruan. This is a piece I composed for our ensemble inspired by this trip. Sadly, I wasn’t able to return for the premiere in Shanghai later that year, but here is a version for 4 violins made in my Louisville living room!
