State legislators were busy in 2025, and 2026 brings important updates to our labor and employment laws.

Which California employee protections laws will go into effect in 2026? Here’s what you need to know:
● Senate Bill 294 requires a new written notice be provided to all current staff regarding specific worker rights, such as immigration, constitutional rights, and workers compensation. These notices must be provided in the language normally used to communicate with employees, including on an annual basis.
● SB 294 also provides employees the ability to name an emergency contact to be notified by the employer if the employee is detained or arrested at their worksite. Violations to this bill may result in civil action as well as penalties.
● Senate Bill 513 expands the obligation for employers to provide employee personnel records related to performance and grievances. This means that as of January 1, 2026, employers that maintain education and training records must ensure they reflect specific information seen here.
