Air India Flight 171 was a scheduled flight from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick that tragically crashed on June 12, 2025, shortly after takeoff. It is currently the subject of intense legal and technical scrutiny in India.
The Incident (June 12, 2025)
The Crash: The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner (registration VT-ANB) crashed just 32 seconds after departing from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport.
Location: The aircraft impacted the hostel block of B.J. Medical College in Ahmedabad, approximately 1.7 kilometers from the runway.
Casualties: The disaster resulted in 260 fatalities—241 on board (including 12 crew members) and 19 people on the ground.
The Survivor: There was only one survivor from the aircraft, a British national seated in seat 11A.
Investigation Findings
A preliminary report by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) highlighted a puzzling sequence of events on the flight deck:
Fuel Cutoff: Data showed that both engine fuel-control switches moved from "RUN" to "CUTOFF" almost simultaneously while the plane was only 300–600 feet in the air. This immediately starved both engines of fuel.
Cockpit Mystery: The Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) captured one pilot asking, "Why did he cut off?" while the other replied that he had not done so.
Attempted Relight: The pilots attempted to move the switches back to "RUN" to restart the engines. One engine began gaining power, but the aircraft lacked the altitude and speed to recover before impact.
Recent Developments (January 2026)
The case has returned to the spotlight this week due to major legal and whistleblower developments:
Supreme Court Intervention (Jan 28, 2026): The Supreme Court of India agreed to hear a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking an independent, court-monitored probe. Petitioners, including the father of the deceased Captain Sumeet Sabharwal and the Federation of Indian Pilots, argue the official investigation has been biased toward "pilot error" to protect Boeing.
Whistleblower Allegations: A report recently submitted to the U.S. Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations alleges that the specific aircraft (VT-ANB) had a history of latent electrical defects dating back to 2014, including a serious fire in 2022. The report suggests electrical faults could have triggered a "phantom" fuel cutoff signal, rather than physical pilot action.
Boeing Under Pressure: While Boeing and GE were initially cleared of mechanical blame by preliminary findings, the new whistleblower reports have led to calls for a more thorough investigation into the 787's electrical systems.
