On December 17th, 1944, Brigadier General Bruce Clarke arrived at a crumbling American command post in St. Vith, Belgium with three men - an operations officer, an aide, and a driver. German General Hasso von Manteuffel's 5th Panzer Army was supposed to capture the town by 6 PM that first day and keep rolling west. Instead, an unknown American brigadier general held St. Vith for seven days and wrecked the entire German timetable.
