A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF THE STORY;👇
Operation Blue Star was a pivotal and controversial military operation in Indian history, carried out in June 1984 under the orders of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. It was aimed at removing Sikh militants, led by Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, from the Golden Temple complex in Amritsar, Punjab—a site deeply sacred to Sikhs.
👉 Background ;
Khalistan Movement:
A separatist campaign emerged in Punjab during the early 1980s, advocating for an independent Sikh state called _Khalistan.
Anandpur Sahib Resolution (1973):
Proposed by the Akali Dal party, it demanded greater autonomy for Punjab. Though not explicitly separatist, it fueled Sikh political aspirations.
Rise of Bhindranwale:
A charismatic and militant religious leader, Bhindranwale gained popularity among Sikh youth. He took refuge in the Golden Temple in 1982, turning it into a fortified base.
⚔️ The Operation (1–10 June 1984) ;
Objective:
To flush out Bhindranwale and his armed followers from the Golden Temple.
👉Execution:
The Indian Army launched Operation to clear militants from the temple.
Operation aim was also to eliminate remaining extremists across Punjab.
The assault began on June 5, with tanks and heavy artillery used inside the temple complex.
By June 7, the army had taken control, but Bhindranwale and many others were killed
👉Casualties and Damage;
Official figures cite hundreds of deaths including civilians, militants, and soldiers.
Independent estimates suggest thousands may have died.
The Akal Takht, a key religious building, was heavily damaged.
The operation deeply hurt Sikh sentiments worldwide.
🔥Aftermath and Consequences;
Indira Gandhi was assassinated on October 31, 1984 by her Sikh bodyguards in retaliation.
This triggered anti-Sikh riots, especially in Delhi, resulting in widespread violence and deaths.
Escalated the Punjab insurgency, which lasted through the 1990s.
Created a lasting rift between the Indian government and sections of the Sikh community.
👉Operation Blue Star remains a deeply emotional and divisive chapter in Indian history. For many Sikhs, it symbolizes a betrayal and desecration of their holiest site. For the Indian state, it was a necessary—though tragic—step to preserve national integrity.
