Johann Adolph Hasse (1699–1783), one of the most celebrated opera composers of the 18th century, composed Arminio in 1730. This opera seria was premiered in Venice and reflects Hasse’s mastery of the Italian style, which earned him the nickname “il caro Sassone” (the dear Saxon).
The story of Arminio draws on the heroic tale of Arminius, the Germanic leader who defeated the Romans in the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest. Hasse’s setting combines dramatic intensity with expressive arias, showcasing his gift for melody and theatrical flair.
As one of Hasse’s early successes, Arminio demonstrates his ability to blend emotional depth with virtuosic vocal writing, paving the way for his later prominence at the courts of Dresden and beyond.
