Welcome back to The Purpose Channel!
We're thrilled to have you join us for another episode in our exciting series: Driving From England to Crete, Greece.
In the previous episodes, we embarked on an epic road trip starting from Wakefield, UK. We crossed several countries including the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Serbia, North Macedonia, and mainland Greece, traveling through Evzones, Thessaloniki, Athens, and finally reaching Piraeus.
In this episode, we'll be sharing our journey from Piraeus Port in Athens to Chania, Crete, a 314 km trip by ferry, taking around 10 hours.
Upon arriving at Piraeus Port, we faced a challenge: there were no clear signs guiding newcomers to the port entrance or the ferry ticket offices. As a result, we parked our car wherever we could find a spot and walked around for about 15 minutes to locate the ticket office.
Our attempt to buy tickets online failed, possibly due to restrictions with using a UK internet connection on the Anek Lines website. It’s likely that using a Greek internet provider would have solved this issue.
During our walk through Piraeus, we observed many people sleeping on the streets. It was a stark reminder of the hardships some face. While we didn’t feel directly threatened, we advise caution around the port area, especially at night.
We finally found a few small offices selling ferry tickets. For our trip to Chania, we paid 169 euros, which covered two people and a car. This breaks down to 42 euros per passenger and 85 euros for the car.
The departure time was set for 21:00, and we chose the deck area rather than a cabin, although there are cabin options available at an extra cost.
A useful tip: ferry tickets for the night trips can be bought for the next available ferry or reserved for a later date. No advance payment is required for reservations, but they will be canceled automatically two days before departure if the full price isn’t paid.
The ticket price remains the same regardless of when you purchase it. Our ferry, Kissamos of Anek Lines, was at Gate 2, named Kissamos. However, finding Gate 2 proved challenging due to the lack of signs. We weren’t the only ones; many travelers had the same problem until a helpful port staff member guided us all.
Once on board, the ferry offered a variety of amenities, including restaurants, cafes, shops, game rooms, and currency exchange services.
The journey was comfortable and uneventful, and we arrived in Chania at 7 am. This marks the end of our long journey to Crete, a successful adventure without any incidents, everything went according to plan.
Thank you for joining us on this leg of our journey! Be sure to watch our next and final episode in this series, where we'll tally up the hours spent, the costs incurred, and the motorway tolls paid in each country.
This information will be invaluable if you’re planning a similar trip or traveling through any of these countries. See you in the next episode!
Safe travels!
