NEW SESSIONS FOR MODERN'S METEOR SUBSIDIARY - Elmore James had put Meteor firmly on the map and sessions by Carl Green and Joe Hill Louis, specifically intended for Meteor, were made in early months of 1953. This was before Joe Bihari padded the catalogue with older material, as Lester's brothers gradually lost interest. Among the December headlines had been one real surprise: "Little Son Jackson will cut late this week in Houston for the Meteor label". It is clear that this never happened or, if it did, the session couldn't be used in view of his contract with Imperial. so it was Carl Green who was next to appear on the new label. Billed as "Mr Broadway" on the first release, Carl
Roy Green was recorded in Los Angeles on 4 February 1953 with the Maxwell Davis Orchestra with Willard McDaniel on piano.
While not an exceptional vocalist, Green did come up with interesting compositions, as shown by "My Best Friend'' with its humour and imagination, and ''Four Years Seven Days'', which as Meteor 5002 sold reasonably well during the spring. For the follow-up on Meteor 5009 ''Horizon'' was on the dismal side, but ''Boogie Freight'' was by far the best song of the date and could have had real potential had it not appeared in the midst of Meteor's dry summer. Carl Green played bass for West Coast band leader/pianist Richard Lewis who, as Dick Lewis, had helped to kick off Imperial's rhythm & blues series in 1947 and had hits with ''Hey Little Boy'' and 'Hey Little Boy' on Aladdin. (Green would only reappear on record briefly in 1962 for one single on Los Angele's Lilly label.) Born in Cherokee County, Texas on February 27, 1908, Green was living in Lakewood, California in 1974 where he remained until his death on May 19, 1995.
