John Elmsly’s work for bass clarinet and fixed electronics, Lachrymar, is “dedicated to the people, particularly the children, of Burma-Myanmar.” John continues,
“Early in 2008 I created a short work for baroque flute and electronic sounds, Weepnot for me for a series devoted to the Stations of the Cross. Lachrymar, originally for daegum (Korean flute), recreates some of these sounds (granulations of the words ‘weep not for me; weep for yourselves and your children’), together with fragments of recordings of a Korean Buddhist ceremony and five definitions of the word ‘freedom.’”
Auckland Chamber Orchestra director Peter Scholes (bass clarinet) performs Lachrymar in this SOUNZ Film.
Audio by Tim Dodd and Adrian Hollay for RNZ Concert.
Filmed by Chris Watson for SOUNZ.
Film funded by NZ On Air.
