It was the memorial day weekends. The original plan was hiking entire Rae Lakes loop. But we couldn't do it as the Paradise Valley bridge washed out. I wish I could cross the river but the ranger in the permit station strongly discouraged us saying that the water was very fast, cold and waist deep, so we should prepare 2 days of extra food to attempt it in case we had to turn back.
As we could not afford two more days, we decided to climb Mt Bago (11,870′) instead of doing the entire loop. Another option was going up to Rae Lakes and turn around. It's definitely more preferable option for the first timer. But I've already visited Rae Lakes from Kearsarge pass ( • Backpacking Kearsarge Pass to Rae Lakes, K... ). So I wanted to try new one.
Day1: drove 5 hours to the trailhead, received the permits and left the trailhead around 11am, camped 13 miles away from the trailhead.
Day 2, hung out near Bullfrog Lake and Kearsarge Lakes, camped at Charlotte Lake.
Day 3: climbed Mt Bago in the morning. It took 3.5h round trip from Charlotte Lake. There was no official trail but it was pretty straightforward to climb Mt Bago. The summit view was amazing.
In the afternoon, we came down 8 miles toward the trailhead.
Day 4: hiked down the remaining 8 miles to the trailhead in the morning and drove back home.
