How to prune a hedge and how to bring a huge hedge under control:
Always prune hedges out of bird nesting season, prune in autumn/winter when the trees are dormant.
Don’t leave the job too long or it may become too big to handle, prune regularly to keep a compact and controlled hedge.
Have the right tools and keep them well maintained, clean, sharp and well oiled.
Identify the type of tree to ensure it can be pruned.
Wear appropriate safety gear, for example, protective glasses, gloves, ear protectors, hard had and chainsaw clothing – if using a chainsaw.
Remove excess horizontal growth first so that you can get closer to the centre.
Be patient, take time and care and never work in low light or whilst tired. Take regular breaks and break the job into manageable bite sized chunks. Make haste slowly.
Stop occasionally, review progress, especially risk assessment.
Tidy up as you go for a clean and safe work environment.
Apply Logic – most tasks can be overcome with logic and thought in advance.
Don’t stand underneath a large branch which you are chopping off.
Don’t be over ambitious with yourself or your tools. Don’t over reach over stretch or over lift.
Chop large offcuts in situ to make them easier to carry away.
Remember pruning stimulates growth.
Cut on the reverse side to avoid your tools getting pinched in the cut.
