Səlam! Mənim adim Andy. Necəyəin?
My name is Andy. How are you?
Let's talk about the Qashqai language.
Qashqai is an Oghuz Turkic language spoken mainly in southwestern Iran, and its speakers commonly refer to it as “Turki.” Linguists classify it within the Southwestern (Oghuz) branch of the Turkic family, placing it alongside closely related varieties such as Azerbaijani and Turkish, though it remains a distinct language with its own sound system and grammar. It is primarily an oral language but, when written, it uses a modified Persian–Arabic script. Structurally, Qashqai is agglutinative and typically follows subject–object–verb order, and it features vowel harmony as well as a rich case system similar to other Turkic languages. The language includes several dialects associated with different tribes of the Qashqai confederation, and these dialects show variation in pronunciation and vocabulary. Estimates of speaker numbers are around one million, though exact figures vary because Iran does not provide detailed language census data.
The Qashqai are a Turkic-speaking tribal confederation primarily living in southern Iran — especially in the provinces of Fars, Khuzestan, Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad, Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari, Bushehr, and southern Isfahan. Historically, most Qashqai were nomadic pastoralists: each year many moved their flocks between highland summer pastures north of Shiraz and lowland winter pastures near the Persian Gulf. Since the mid-20th century (particularly after the 1960s), there has been significant sedentarization; many now live in villages or towns rather than leading a full nomadic life. The Qashqai confederation comprises several major tribes, including among others the Amaleh (Amele), Kashkuli, Darreh-Shuri (Dere-Shorlu), Sheshbeyli, and Farsimadan, along with smaller sub-tribes. The Qashqai are mostly Shia Muslims. Their culture includes traditional arts such as weaving (notably rugs and textiles), and many still maintain aspects of their tribal and pastoral heritage even if now sedentary.
