This event occurred on September 30, 2026 at the UCLA Luskin Conference Center.
The Black Portraiture[s] conference makes its west coast debut to explore the theme of the Black built environment. Co-Hosted by New York University, Getty, and UCLA, the conference examines the historicity and rich panoply encompassing the Black built environment, both physical and imagined. Exploring the concept and its relationship to photography, architecture, urban planning, and visual culture, artists have reconceived and reconstructed visions of our built environment while exploring themes conversant with the spiritual and ritualistic continuities of the African diaspora. Moreover, this convening explores the artistic contributions to forms of memory, visual legacies of Black townships, and the charges of conceived spaces therein. The conference presents and encourages research and scholarship on continuities between modern and contemporary visual and structural approaches, centering the audacity of Black-built environments from within the Diaspora’s politics, architecture, art, film, music, migrations, and global iterations.
Panel Description:
We are now seeing DEAI bound for the same circuitous eventuality that other “movements” have suffered without substantive or systemic changes. Panelists in this session explore how black arts are “experiencing a moment—a full-circle moment” by looking at how the current conspicuous consumption of DEAI programming and the commodification of black arts, history and culture, and black discourse by mainstream institutions is reminiscent in many ways to the rise and fall of the Harlem Renaissance era.
Presented by Paula Allen
Moderated by Rebecca Hankins
