Aljoun Castle Tour: A Glimpse into Jordan's Islamic Architecture

Описание: Let’s look at the Islamic castle in the north of Jordan called Ajloun
Entry to Ajloun Castle was with my Jordan Pass
I stand here once again in front of Ajloun Castle
This castle was created by Salaheddin during the Crusades
The kingdom of Jerusalem was founded in Jerusalem, it was
Salahuddin was born in 1171 and died in 1250.
Salahuddin drove the Crusaders out of the area.
This Castle remained under Ayyubid rule until 1263 when the Mukluks (Egyptians) took over
This part of the magical Ajloun Castle is this dry moat
This dry moat was serviced by a drawbridge going toward the Barbican
A Barbican just means an outer defense on either side that makes the enemy filter through a one-way entry
Then walking up through the Barbican before you get to the corner where there is a murder hole, meurtrière.
In the rock is 2 holes, this is where a rope would have gone in and out to assist with the
raising and lowering the drawbridge.

As you're walking up the stairs there is another groove in the wall, that is another tethering point for the horses to draw the drawbridge
After you come up the internal staircase there is an anti-room. You know that it's an impressive anti-room because there is a fireplace with a flue.
Coming into the space that is the kitchen you have to remember that this castle would only hold a few hundred people it's not like Karak or Shobek, they are massive that hold thousands. This is a very small Castle.
In the lower sections and the outside that would be where the horses and livestock were housed. Anything that has a really high ceiling like that would indicate that it was for you know horses, livestock, or storage.
There's a well. As you come in the front entrance with another well down there.
Without water you have nothing, you have no life.
This amazing space was full of olive groves. It would have had a lot of sheep, wheat, and crops. It would have had everything you need to survive.
This site is only maybe 177 kilometres from Damascus, Syria, and Bosra Iraq.
I say water collection is very important, there is another well
As we move up here the stairs towards the Byzantine Church you can see the Cornucopia. It looks more damaged than the last time I saw it.
Coming into the space that's the Byzantine Church, there is a well or a font
In the Byzantine Church, it's not easily recognizable but that's the Loaves and the Fishes. The little square things are the bread and the fish have little curves on their backs.
There is an old photo which I will show from a previous visit
You can tell that this is another important room, this is Zain Al Usama Hall, it has a fireplace and a flue
Another well
The cloud is very low so they would be communicating by pigeon and without that cloud, the visibility would be to Damascus in the North
An amazing castle even though they're doing a lot of restoration, a lot of it is still the original
This is an impressive, absolutely fantastic way to fill in an afternoon exploring the Islamic castle of Ajloun Castle in the north of Jordan
