TRANSCRIPT OF Baritone Saxaphonist MIKE BRIGNOLA playing Bill Holman’s beautiful arrangement of George Gershwin’s RHAPSODY IN BLUE in 1997 with THE DENNIS NODAY ORCHESTRA at The Wezel Performing Arts Center in Sarasota, FL. Bill Holman wrote this arrangement in the early 1970’s for The STAN KENTON ORCHESTRA to feature Stan’s Baritone Saxist CHUCK CARTER (d.2003).
Short MIKE BRIGNOLA BIO:
Baritone saxophonist Mike Brignola is a graduate of the Univ. of Rochester, and played in the Eastman jazz ensembles. After departing Rochester, Mike joined the big band of Woody Herman in July, 1980. Mike played on 5 Woody records and hundreds of performances worldwide. Mike is not related to the late Nick Brignola, one of the all time great jazz baritone saxophonists. Mike relies on quoting a comment Nick made in 1983, in a letter to JazzTimes magazine: “Woody suggested that the only way to determine if Mike & I are related is to compare family spaghetti sauce recipes!”.
Since 1994, Mike has been a resident of South Florida. He has played & recorded CD’s with the Miami Saxophone Quartet, the South Florida Jazz Orchestra, and the Jaco Pastorius Word of Mouth Revisited Big Band – and numerous other bands.
DENNIS NODAY was Stan Kenton’s Lead Tpt 1971-75, and Lead Tpt with Maynard Ferguson 1975/1978, now leads his own Dennis Noday Orchestra. In 2016, Dennis & Lee Harris (baritonist, composer, arranger - RIP) found and co-led SUPERBAND in South Florida, which later became The Horizons Jazz Orchestra.
