A North Sea crossing from Vlieland to Whitby, June 2023.
We set sail from the West Frisian island of Vlieland, bound for the Yorkshire coast. Underway on the North Sea, we encountered a striking algal bloom — Noctiluca scintillans — turning the sea to a strange, glowing red.
Landfall was Whitby: a town steeped in maritime history, where James Cook began his apprenticeship and his expedition ships were built. The approach demands timing — the 1909 steel swing bridge over the River Esk opens only ±2 hours around high water. Not easy after a 220 miles passage!
After a brief stay, we sailed 40 hours back across the North Sea to the island of Texel.
