The Church continues the celebration of the Epiphany of the Lord today on this Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. As Jesus descends into the waters of the Jordan, He prefigures our own baptism in waters made holy by Jesus’ death and resurrection. Jesus invites us to follow Him in the work of living out our baptismal promises.

While we rightly celebrate the joy of eternal life and our freedom from sin, which are revealed as we emerge from the waters of baptism, we must also accompany Jesus in the descent beneath the waters. This is a real dying. Even for Jesus, the descent into the depths of the waters is a falling into the truth of our suffering, our grieving, our wrestling with our demons, our reluctant surrender of our will, and our dying. Jesus’ participation in this baptism makes the whole journey holy and confirms the promise of resurrection life.

It is important for us first to trust the sacred journey of descent if we are to trust the promise of ascending with Jesus into new life, when we will hear again, and finally trust, God’s voice from heaven speaking to us, “This is my beloved, in whom I am well pleased.”
