Jon from CNCROi.com discusses the process of building a welding table attachment for his custom laser-cut downdraft table, a project born out of necessity for efficient sanding and dust management. He designed the downdraft table years ago to eliminate airborne dust while sanding, with an extraction system that funnels the dust outside or through a filtration system. Since welding is an increasingly common aspect of Jon's business, he needed a versatile solution for both sanding and welding tasks. The attachment, made of solid metal, connects directly to the downdraft table, ensuring that welding fumes are efficiently sucked out of the shop.
Jon explains that while the downdraft table initially served as a sanding solution, he realized it could also accommodate a welding table attachment. The attachment is designed with angle iron on both edges, fitting perfectly under the downdraft table. The bottom part of the table is removable, allowing Jon to clean the dust from the downdraft system before attaching the welding table. This versatility means Jon can use the same table for multiple purposes, minimizing the need for extra tables in his shop. The welding table itself is constructed from 1/8-inch wall square stock (51 mm) and 4-inch flat bars (102 mm) made from hot-rolled steel, ensuring a sturdy and durable structure.
Jon also addresses concerns about fire safety, explaining that the table is made from MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard), which is fire-resistant, making it a safe choice for welding. He emphasizes that although he is not a professional welder, he learned welding techniques while building the table. Despite not having prior welding experience, Jon was able to weld the components together, teaching himself through trial and error. He acknowledges that welding is not difficult, but perfecting the process and creating strong, clean welds takes years of practice and skill.
The table’s design and welding process were simple, with Jon using angle irons to build the frame and flat bars for reinforcement. He grinds down the metal surface before welding to ensure a clean contact for the welds, which is crucial for the quality of the weld. Jon shares that his first attempts at welding were challenging, particularly when it came to getting the speed and technique right. Too fast a weld can burn the metal without creating a strong bond, while too slow results in excessive buildup of material. Through these challenges, Jon gained a deeper understanding of welding, improving his skills over time.
Jon also highlights the importance of preparation in welding, stressing the need to grind the metal surfaces for better grounding and a clean weld. He recalls the learning curve and the amount of time it took to complete the welding process, especially the grinding involved in ensuring a clean surface. As part of his ongoing practice, Jon continues to refine his welding skills, with the goal of achieving high-quality welds for future custom projects at CNCROi.com. He shares his experience of making custom welding tags for his projects, using a Trotec fiber laser (5212) to etch tags with precision.
Jon concludes by encouraging those interested in custom welding projects to contact CNCROi.com. He notes that while he is still perfecting his welding skills, the equipment and knowledge gained through self-teaching allow him to tackle a variety of metalworking projects, from custom welding tags to larger metal creations. Jon’s journey in welding, much like his past experiences with woodworking and laser cutting, demonstrates the importance of hands-on practice and continuous learning in mastering a craft.
