Have you ever wondered what might happen if the delicate connection between your brain and body broke? If you told your hand to move, and instead it jumped? If you told your feet to walk, and instead they danced?
After spending years training as a classical clarinettist, Liza found that their brain had other ideas. Twitching hands made playing impossible and could lead to unconsciousness or worse. Eventually they were diagnosed with a rare form of epilepsy, triggered by the very hand movements they use to play.
Determined to learn how to make music again, Liza started searching for a way to retrain their brain, mapping out the glitches in a musical game of snakes and ladders. This recovery process led them to composition through improvisation. The musical sections of 'Ten Thousand Hours' are each drawn stylistically from different stages of this transformation, moving from the classical to the electronic.
'Ten Thousand' Hours is a short excerpt from Liza’s live musical performance and short story, INNERVATE, created with the support of Help Musicians UK Fusion Fund. The new live version incorporates samples from Liza's new album, The End Times, released in April 2025.
