Talking ASEAN on "Regional Defence Cooperation amidst COVID-19: Challenges & Opportunities"

Описание: Defence establishments across the region have been forced to adapt to the challenges posed by the current COVID-19 pandemic crisis, yet attempts for the region-wide military cooperation in response to the COVID-19 pandemic have produced mixed results. Notwithstanding ASEAN's early responses through the ASEAN Center for Military Medicine (ACMM) and ASEAN defence ministers' joint statement, there has not been much of practical cooperation to follow. Meanwhile, the dire impact of COVID-19 has also forced governments around the world to defer or cancel their scheduled joint military exercises. As a platform for confidence building measures, such cancellation and postponement might affect regional security negatively.

How has COVID-19 impacted defence cooperation agenda in the region? What roles do the militaries in the region play in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic? What would be the role of defence cooperation in increasing regional resilience to future health crisis? How should ASEAN’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic be assessed in the context of comprehensive security approach?
