অপরুপ শোভা ছড়ানো মসজিদটি মানুষের হৃদয় ও ইতিহাসে স্থান দখল করে নিয়েছে। এর জন্যই বাংলাদেশ সরকার ঐতিহ্যকে তুলে ধরতে একশত টাকার নোটে তারা মসজিদের ছবি তুলে ধরেছে। সতের শতকে দিল্লি, লাহোর ও আগ্রায় নির্মিত মুঘল স্থাপত্যশৈলীর অনুকরণে মসজিদটি নির্মাণ করা হয়েছিল। এর নাম তারা হলেও কেউ বলেন সিতারা মসজিদ আবার কেউ কেউ বলে গোলাম পীরের মসজিদ। তারা মসজিদ, সিতারা মসজিদ ও গোলাম পীরের মসজিদ- তিনটি নামই বেশ পরিচিত মসজিদটি। নির্মাণকালে মসজিদটির দৈর্ঘ্য ছিল ৩৩ ফুট এবং প্রস্থ ছিল ১২ ফুট।


মসজিদটি শুধু ঐতিহ্যের কারণেই বিখ্যাত নয়। এর সৌন্দর্যের টানে অনেক বিদেশি পর্যটক ও প্রতিনিয়ত ভিড় করে এখানে। মসজিদের মূল অংশ ছাড়াও, অতিরিক্ত অংশটি মসজিদের আরেক বিশেষ আকর্ষণ। মসজিদটিতে ঢোকা মাত্রই দেখা মিলবে এক বিশাল তারার আকৃতির পানির ফোয়ারা।
মসজিদের অভ্যন্তর ও বাইরের পুরোটাই মোজাইক নকশা করা। এর গায়ে চিনামাটির বাসন, পেয়ালা ইত্যাদির ছোট ভগ্নাংশ ও কাচের টুকরো ব্যবহৃত হয়েছে। এ পদ্ধতিকে ‘চিনি টিকরি’ বা চিনি দানার কাজ বলা হয়। মসজিদের গাত্রনকশায় রয়েছে ফুলদানি, ফুলের ঝাড়, গোলাপ ফুল, এক বৃন্তে একটি ফুল, চাঁদ, তারা, নক্ষত্র ও আরবি ক্যালিগ্রাফিক লিপি।

The magnificent mosque has occupied a place in people's hearts and history. That's why the Bangladesh government has put pictures of mosques on one hundred taka notes to highlight the tradition. The mosque was built in the seventeenth century in imitation of the Mughal style of architecture built in Delhi, Lahore and Agra. Although its name is Tara, some say Sitara Masjid and some say Golam Pir Masjid. Tara Masjid, Sitara Masjid and Golam Peer Masjid - all three names are well known to the mosque. At the time of construction, the mosque was 33 feet long and 12 feet wide.
