"The Sacred War" (Свяще́нная война́), also known as "Arise, Great Country!" (Встава́й, страна́ огро́мная!) is one of the most famous Soviet songs of the Second World War. The music is by Alexander Alexandrov, founder of the Alexandrov Ensemble, better known as the Red Army Choir, and the musical composer of the State Anthem of the Soviet Union. The lyrics are by Vasily Lebedev-Kumach, another very famous musician of the wartime period.

The circumstances of the composition and first performance of the song were hurried; the lyrics were published on 24 June 1941, and Alexandrov immediately wrote the music for them, writing the notes out on a blackboard for the singers to copy manually. The first performance was on 26 June at Belorussky Railway Station, where according to eyewitnesses it was sung five times in succession. "The Sacred War" has been sung in several languages including Russian, Finnish, Hungarian, French, German, English, Korean, Japanese, Punjabi, Vietnamese, Hindi, Chinese, Latvian, and Estonian.
Today, the Sacred War/Священная война is one of the most recognizable components of the Soviet music canon, as well as the repertoire of the A. V. Alexandrov Ensemble. This epic trailer-style orchestration will transport you back in time to the front lines of the Great Patriotic War, and of the Soviet people's struggle for freedom against fascism.
