The Lord's Day Exodus 20:8-11; Romans 14:4-6; Revelation 1:10
February 15, 2026 Rhythms of Rest and Work
Scripture transitions from the Sabbath's mandatory rest to the Lord’s Day's celebratory worship. Rooted in Exodus, rest honors God’s design. Romans grants Christian freedom from legalism, while Revelation centers Sunday on Christ’s resurrection and spiritual devotion.
5 Key Teaching Points
God Established Sacred Time
Rest and worship are part of God’s original design.
The Lord’s Day Is About Devotion, Not Legalism
God desires hearts, not rigid rule-keeping.
Christ Gives Meaning to the Lord’s Day
Resurrection worship replaces ritual obligation.
Believers Honor God According to Conviction
Faithful worship flows from sincere devotion.
Worship Aligns Us Spiritually
The Lord’s Day refocuses believers on God’s purpose and presence.
Exodus 20: The Fourth Commandment—Remember the Sabbath God commands: "Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath to the LORD your God" (verses 8-10). Why? Because God rested on the seventh day after creating the world (verse 11). He's modeling a rhythm: work, then rest. Labor, then worship. Six days on, one day off.
Romans 14: Freedom in Non-Essentials Paul addresses disputes among Christians about special days. Some people think one day is more sacred than another. Others treat every day the same. Paul's verdict? "Each of them should be fully convinced in their own mind" (verse 5). The person who observes the day does it for the Lord. The person who doesn't also does it for the Lord. Don't judge each other over it (verse 4).
Revelation 1: John's Vision on the Lord's Day John writes: "On the Lord's Day I was in the Spirit, and I heard behind me a loud voice..." (verse 10). This is the first mention of "the Lord's Day" in Scripture—most scholars agree this refers to Sunday, the day Jesus rose from the dead, the day early Christians gathered to worship.
Bottom line? Rest is commanded. Worship is essential. But legalism about WHICH day misses the point. The heart behind the practice matters more than rigid rules. God wants you to set aside time to rest in Him, worship Him, and remember who He is.
The Lord alone judges hearts. Our role is to serve faithfully and build each other up, rather than judging or boasting.
How we live, lead, and relate to one another should reflect the values of Christ's Kingdom."
