Breaking: Gen. Otema Awany Urges Religious Leaders to Intervene in Tensions at Ker Kwaro Acholi
Lt. Gen. Charles Otema Awany, commander of the Reserve Force, has appealed to religious leaders in the Acholi sub-region to take the lead in mediating the tensions among the Rwodi Acholi at Ker Kwaro Acholi.
Speaking at a ceremony marking the 80th birthday of the former bishop of the Diocese of Northern Uganda and his 50th anniversary of priesthood, Lt. Gen. Otema Awany called on clergymen to help resolve the conflict—as they did during the insurgency in Northern Uganda.
Tensions at Ker Kwaro Acholi began in 2023 when the majority of the Rwodi Acholi voted out Rwot Onen David Acana II as Lawirwodi Acholi, accusing him of mismanaging the assets of Ker Kwaro Acholi and disrespecting the community. Rwot Onen David Acana II has since maintained support from a faction of the Rwodi Acholi. Later, in 2024, this faction elected Rwot Richard Santo Apire as the new Lawirwodi Acholi, a decision protested by Rwot Onen David Acana II.
Gen. Otema specifically urged Bishop Emeritus Leonard Mark Baker Ochola of the Kitgum Diocese and Nelson Onono Onweng to work towards uniting the rival Rwodi factions.
