Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight enroute from Lahore, with 91 passengers and 7 crew on board, crashed near the Karachi airport, just a minute before the Airbus A320-214 was to land this afternoon. In the final moments before the crash, recorded on a flight tracking website, one of the pilots can be heard telling the Air Traffic Controller that they had lost both the engines, before sending the international distress message, "Mayday, Mayday, Mayday”. The PIA flight PK-8303 went down in a densely populated residential area, Jinnah Garden area near Model Colony in Malir just short of the Jinnah International Airport. 🇵🇰

crashed while attempting to landing in Karachi on 22 May 2020. Flight 8303 was enroute from Lahore when it crashed near the airport after conducting a go around and during its second landing attempt. The flight was operated by Airbus A320-214, registration AP-BLD, (MSN 2274). The aircraft is powered by two CFM-56 engines. It was originally delivered to China Eastern Airlines in September 2004. Pakistan International Airlines acquired the Airbus A320-214 in October 2014. 🇵🇰

This aircraft is tracked via MLAT, which means it does not broadcast position information via ADS-B, position data for MLAT tracked flights is calculated by the time difference of signal arrival to four receivers. If fewer than four receivers see the aircraft, position data cannot be calculated, thus limiting the positional data available for this flight. Altitude data is broadcast and altitude data was received from PK8303.

Altitude data show a typical climb, cruise, and descent, followed by a go around and at least one additional landing attempt.

Near Lahore, data was received by at least four receivers allowing us to calculate positions for the flight for a short period of time.

Shocked and saddened by the PIA crash. Deeply saddened by the loss of life due to a plane crash in Pakistan. Our condolences to the families of the deceased, and wishing speedy recovery to those injured. 🇵🇰
