This webinar took place on the 2nd of July 2025.
Panel discussion: In its Agenda 2020+5, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) emphasizes the importance of addressing sustainability in the planning and delivery of the Olympic Games. In recent years, some promising results have begun to emerge, most notably with the Paris 2024 Olympics, which set new benchmarks for environmental responsibility compared to previous editions.
Despite these advancements, hosting a mega sporting event that requires extensive infrastructure and draws millions of spectators, alongside athletes, officials, and media representatives, presents significant sustainability challenges.
In this panel discussion, we bring together international scholars whose research focuses on the intersection of the Olympic Games and environmental sustainability. They will share their latest insights and findings. We also aim to include a representative from the IOC to provide an institutional perspective and discuss current efforts, innovations, and challenges from within the organization.
Chair: Prof. Dr. Annette R. Hofmann (ICSSPE/Ludwigsburg University)
Panellists: Prof. Dr. Pierre-Olaf Schut, Gustave Eiffel University (France), Prof. Dr. Daniel Svensson, Malmö University (Sweden) and Prof. Dr. Jeffrey F. Levine, Drexel University (USA)
