#SocialMedia is a big part of our everyday life. Patients and family members are actively getting information off of the web and various social media sites. While some of the information available is of value, unfortunately much is misleading, wrong, outdated, or simply dangerous.
Physician and other healthcare providers at times tale a negative approach to patients seeking out more information on social media. My feeling is that because physicians are not spending enough time with their patients, gaps in knowledge are created, and patients seek out information on their own.
I recommend physician become familiar with a few sites that can provide credible health information to their patients. We need to take the lead being a resource for those we provide care to - sharing such information with them.
If we don't want patients going to questionable sites, we need to direct them better.
