In this August 14, 2024 Beyond Contact podcast, Captan Ron and Guest Todd Curtis discussed a range of UFO and UAP issues, including Todd's June 2024 presentation at Contact in the Desert, where he gave an overview of the U.S. government's evolving relationship with UFOs, including how UAP or Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena replaced the term UFO to describe a range of observations and Phenomena.
Todd discussed his aviation safety approach to UAP, where he does not care what is causing high risk situtaions in the air, he is more concerned with understanding what is happening and how to prevent these situations from causing incidents and accidents.
He shared that in his aviation career, he has heard many stories from pilots and other avatiion professionals about UAP encounters, but until recently there was little incentive to report such incidents.
He explained that when it comes to aviation safety, it is imporatnt to have informaiton obout safety events reported to trustworthy organizations and to share the data and analysis with the aviaiton community. Outside of a 1986 event where the FAA ananlyzed a UAP encouter with a 747 over Alaska, he had not seen this happen with UAP events.
Todd described a 2006 sightig of a UFO report over Chicago O'Hare airport as the event that got him seriously interested in the subject. In spite of having multiple witnesses report some kind of aerospace vehicle hovering over one of the passenger terminals. In spite of this being a clear threat to both aviation safety and natinoal security, there was no serious investigaiton by the FBI, FAA or any other government organization.
Todd used basic principles of risk assessment in his professional career in aviation safety, and he applied the same principles to UAP. He started this effort by looking for well-documented UAP events that had the potential to become an aviation incident or accient, and found over a dozen suspected UAP cases in NASA's Aviation Safety Reporting Syste database.
Todd explained how there are a variety of aviation safety reporting systems, both military and civilian, that may have other reports. He aslo beleived that there is no real government conspiracy to hide or deny UFO or UAP reports. Based on his aviation experience both as an Air Force officer and as civilian, he believes if an aviation professional in government or industry were to report a safety situation involving a UAP, rather than risk professional ridicule by calling it a UFO or UAP, that person would tell as little truth as possible for reasons of organizational and bureaucratic survival.
Todd and Capatain Ron discussed seveeral other aviation issues, including Todd's experiences working with the media on aviation safety issues such as after the crash of a 777 in San Francisco in 2013 and a 737 MAX event where a door blew off in flight. Todd also discussed how the ways that UAP can be be observed has gone through many changes in the last forty year, including military systems that may be able to look at a UAP using sensors on the ground, in the air, and in space, and combine that with eyewitness reports to get a very comprehensive description of a UAP event.
He also noted that unlike events like the Chicago O'Hare sighting, which took place before the iPhone era, documenting any future sighting may be more like what happened with the Kobe Bryant helicopter crash with many phone cameras, security cameras, and other systems gathering pictures and data on the event.
