The Mark Occhilupo Story would make for an epic movie. Father migrated from Italy to Australia in the 1950s. The legendary name Occhilupo translates from Italian into "the eyes of the wolf"- that would make a great title. He got his first surfboard at age 9 after his sisters grabbed one out of a rubbish heap near their family home. He soon hit the waters off Cronulla and was on his way. Jim Banks and the older guys took him under their wings, and Occy began the contest scene- AND HE WAS WINNING.

By age 16, Occy was surfing in the ASP Trials; by 17, he qualified for the World Tour. Banks set up a meeting with Gordon Merchant, and he was soon signing a contract with Billabong. Gordon threw down the $40K to get young Mark Occhilupo a year on tour; the rest is history. Respect.
