Jim Goodwin’s Frustration with Officials After Dundee United 1-3 Hibs | Post-Match Interview
❌ VAR Decisions Costly for Dundee United?
Dundee United manager Jim Goodwin voiced his frustration with officiating decisions after his side’s 1-3 loss to Hibernian, claiming crucial calls went against them in a match that could have had a significant impact on their European qualification hopes.
🗣 "I need to be really careful with my words tonight, but some big decisions have gone against us in such an important game. Had we drawn, it wouldn't have been a disaster, but we were pushing for the win. We thought we scored a perfectly good goal, but it took nearly four minutes for VAR to disallow it – and I just don't see the evidence."
Goodwin was particularly upset about Sam Dalby’s disallowed goal, which VAR ruled out for handball, and a corner kick decision that led to Hibs’ second goal.
🗣 "I’m 70 yards away, and even I could tell that Furini's shot deflected off a Hibs player. That should have been a corner for us, but instead, Hibs get a goal kick, and from that, they score. Yes, we could have defended it better, but it shouldn't have happened in the first place."
📺 VAR Taking Too Long?
Goodwin also criticized the length of time it took for VAR to reach decisions, with players even stiffening up due to the long wait.
🗣 "Lucas Stevenson had to come off because he stiffened up waiting around for four minutes while VAR made a decision. Something that is 'clear and obvious' should not take that long. If you need nearly four minutes to find a reason to disallow a goal, maybe there isn’t one."
🏆 European Football at Stake
The Dundee United boss emphasized the financial and competitive importance of securing European football, making these refereeing decisions even more significant.
🗣 "If we had won tonight, we'd have gone third in the table. That’s how tight things are. These decisions could be the difference between playing in Europe or not, and that means a lot financially for this club."
Despite the defeat, Goodwin praised his players for their performance and determination, stating that the scoreline didn’t reflect the game.
🗣 "3-1 looks like we were well beaten, but anyone at the game will tell you that wasn’t the case. The third goal is irrelevant – we were throwing bodies forward trying to get an equalizer. I’d rather go for it than sit back and accept defeat."
