Wagon Wheels is 'Low Rider' for the little red wooden wagon set. I loaded up my young son in the back of our wagon, as I often did in my days as a stay-at-home Dad, and towed him back and forth in front of our house to record the actual sound of our wagon wheels on the sidewalk in front of our Oakville home. I used the only field recorder I had at the time, an old super 8 camcorder. The offset rhythm of the wheels on the cracks gave me the tempo and feel. The final pass (with the organ) is meant to represent the overloaded senses of a small boy taking in all around him as he is pulled along a bustling downtown sidewalk. That old wagon is currently sitting under an inch of dust in our garage, having sat unused for years now. Still waiting for the Smithsonian to call, I guess. I once imagined a video with all the dads and moms in a neighbourhood emerging from their driveways and taking to the roads all at once, before heading to a giant rendezvous in the park, finishing in front of a band on stage playing Wagon Wheels. Perhaps my next dally with A.I.?
The Sliding Song
Basically a much, much kinder, gentler remake of the great Paul McCartney's Helter Skelter, with maybe a souçon of Steve Earle's Nowhere Road thrown in for flavouring. Our first family home in East Toronto was close to a few playgrounds and we visited them often. This was back in the day when slides were metal and tall and came with steep stairs. But to a kid was there anything more thrilling? Oh, and I'm pretty sure one of the birds heard before the song starts is me whistling.
