The voice of Ray Walker (bass singer for the legendary Jordanaires) is on records that have now sold in excess of 8 billion copies. In 1976 and 1979, Along with the other members of the Jordanaires (Gordon Stoker, Louis Nunley, and Curtis Young) Ray was awarded a "Superpickers" award by the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences for having sung on more Top 10 discs than any other performer in history. In November 1984, the Jordanaires were honored with the "CMA Masters Award" for their lifetime contribution to music. A small few of their big recordings include Jimmy Dean's "Big Bad John", Jim Reeves' "Four Walls", Loretta Lynn's "Coal Miner's Daughter", Patsy Cline's "Crazy", Ricky Nelson's "Travelin' Man", Conway Twitty's "It's only Make Believe", Johnny Horton's "Battle of New Orleans", and literally hundreds of others. Through Elvis, the Jordanaires' influence passed into the mainstream of popular music. Thinking back to a meeting with Beatle member, Paul McCartney, Ray remembers being told, "When Elvis's records came out, we listened to the vocal backing harmonies. They encouraged us to sing harmony."
However, with all his talent and fame, Ray Walker has remained faithful and true to his lovely wife, Marilyn, and to Jesus Christ. In fact, Ray can often be heard saying that while singing with the Jordanaires has been his occupation, his faith in Jesus and work in the church has always been his dedication -- his life.
Thinking about his early years, Ray wrote, "My dad put me on my feet in front of the church, the month of my sixth birthday, March 1940. 1 made my first talk and led my first song at Sunday school that day. My dad was an evangelist and we moved every two to four years. My dad, R.C. Walker, Sr. and mom, Elizabeth Walker, both sang well. Daddy was a master of order of events preaching and teaching. I got the idea that everything has a story and should be told in order. Recording professionally since 1958 and listening to the stories in the songs we recorded, verified this fact. The more I led singing in our worship services, the more I realized that the entire song service could be and should be 'a story' or 'theme;' and if organized in the proper sequences the song service would be more edifying, whether we were conscious of the fact or not; consequently, THE GOSPEL STORY IN SONG."
Ray's CD titled, THE GOSPEL STORY IN SONG, contains 21 songs plus his reading of excerpts from Matthew 27, 28. The CD is available on CDbaby.com for purchase and/or download.
