This video "Gerrit & Joke" tells the story of Gerrit and Joke.
Gerrit was 58 when he heard he was suffering from Alzheimer's disease.
Together with Joke, he commences battle with the disease, each of them trying to find a way through it.
Initially, he continues to live at home.
The increasing amount of care and supervision required becomes a source of aggravation as much for Gerrit as for Joke. Despite this, they jointly succeed in giving meaning to their lives.
After a while, Gerrit is admitted to a nursing home ward for early-onset dementia.
From the start of his illness, Gerrit has made it clear that he wants euthanasia. In the words of the SCEN doctor, it was a voluntary, sustained and considered request. However, we'll see in this video that his request is not honoured once the battle against dementia becomes too difficult.
The (52 min.) video gives a realistic picture of how it is to live with dementia, an individual's wish for euthanasia and the carer's role and influence in that regard. The impact on a couple when one of them is affected by dementia is palpable.
