At the 2025 California Charter Schools Conference, the California Charter Schools Association (CCSA) officially renamed its Legacy Award as the Don Shalvey Legacy Award, honoring the late Don Shalvey—widely known as the godfather of California’s charter school movement—who passed away in March 2024.
The Don Shalvey Legacy Award is presented to leaders whose work can best be measured by the countless lives they have transformed, the opportunities opened for thousands of scholars, and the forward-thinking practices they nurtured in hundreds of classrooms and the generations of educators they have inspired.
🌟 The recipient of the 2025 Don Shalvey Legacy Award is Liza Bercovici, founder Gabriella Charter Schools.
