GENEVA, Switzerland (WKRC) - Burnout, which results from workplace stress, is now officially a medical diagnosis, according to the World Health Organization.
It's classified as a "syndrome," or a collection of symptoms that result from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. This formal recognition puts it into the international classification of diseases, which is the WHO's handbook so providers can diagnose what is wrong.
Its symptoms can result from any work profession. They usually include a drop in energy, exhaustion, distancing yourself from your job, reduced professionalism and feeling cynical or negative.
The classification specifically states that burnout is linked to your occupation and should not be applied to describe other experiences or parts of your life.
The idea behind this is that it can be taken seriously and we can all learn ways to manage it. Critics argue if people see it just as a person being lazy on the job, it often doesn't get addressed.
Medical assistance is suggested if you feel like you have this condition, and asking for help through employee assistance programs may also be a way to reach out.
