Big Top Circus Calliope (Audio Fidelity AFSD 5986, 1963) was recorded completely outdoors under the big-top tent at Paul Eakins’ famous Gay 90s Village in Sikeston, Missouri, using the museum’s magnificent restored 46-note Wurlitzer “Caliola” steam-calliope, the very same type that once rode the circus bandwagons of the 1890s–1920s.

Captured in glorious early-1960s wide-range stereo with real open-air ambience (you can hear the breeze and distant crowd!), this is the closest you’ll ever get to standing next to a real steam calliope as it blasts out marches, waltzes and gallops at full glorious, ear-piercing volume. Audio Fidelity’s engineers went all-out to preserve the thunderous overtones and metallic shimmer that no modern digital recreation can match.

Paul Eakins (1918–1990) was America’s foremost collector-restorer of automatic musical instruments. His Gay 90s Village was a living museum of band organs, nickelodeons and calliopes that drew thousands of visitors every summer. This album remains the gold-standard calliope record and one of the wildest, most joyful “field recordings” of the entire hi-fi era.
