Greetings All,
In the quest for more speed via simple mods a new tweak has been introduced by Jonathan Bates over at BlackBarrelCustoms, another maker of Daisy based custom rifles with a distinctive take on custom BB guns. He's nice guy who builds pretty cool Daisy's. Check out this video:

I watched it and was very impressed by the speed increase he achieved with a factory mainspring, a modded airtube and a super long shot tube. I mean super long. So I set about looking at the airtube and seeing if the dual port design would yield any speed increase in the older bottlecap guns I like to work on.
As discussed in this video, dual port air tubes are not new to Daisy BB guns. All of the prewar production guns had the old school "Top Hat" air tubes which did sport dual inlet ports as part of the basic design although the inlet apertures were quite a bit smaller than the single port design that is in the current production gun. The aperture orientation was also different as they were part of the air tube seat, not the air tube shaft itself. That placement may be part of the difficulties I encountered with my dual port fabrication attempt.
There are several parts to this project. The primary motivator being the fact there are currently no factory air tubes available for purchase direct from Daisy and no projected availability date for any restock. The 7/64" air tubes I use in my modding projects are made from those stock air tubes so they are a vital part of my efforts. I had been talking with Mark Ritter over at Cobalt 327 on Ebay about possible substitutes for the current 7/64 air tube program and he sent over some thin wall stainless tubing to see if it could be converted into a slightly larger bore airtube that would work in a Daisy. The short story is that they make a pretty good airtube and I think the second attempt will deliver the increase in speed I was hoping for in the first prototype. I'll know in a few days.
All in all it's kind of exciting to be working in new directions on old problems with new folks.
We'll see where the experimentation leads us.
Thanks for watching!
