Xochimilco is one of the sixteen districts of Mexico City. It is located in the southeast of the Mexican capital and has an area of ​​122 km².
The word Xochimilco means “Chinampas de Flores”.

The origins of Xochimilco date back to the Mesoamerican Preclassic Period when its shores and islands were home to various peoples.
At the beginning of the Postclassic, Xochimilco was an important altépetl that was subdued by the Mexicas in the 15th century. From then until the 60s of the 20th century, the territory of Xochimilco became one of the food suppliers for the Mexican capital.

In the territory of Xochimilco there are 14 native towns that preserve many features of their traditional culture and indigenous heritage, despite the advance of urbanization. In addition, the southern mountains and the central lake area are part of the largest natural reserve in the Federal District.
In contrast, the northern area of ​​Xochimilco is fully integrated into the urban area of ​​Mexico City, and there are some industrial and service areas that constitute an important part of the economic life of the delegation.

Xochimilco is particularly important due to the existence of the chinampas. They have their origin in a Mesoamerican agricultural technique that was developed and shared by several peoples in the Valley of Mexico. After the drying up of the Anáhuac lakes, only Xochimilco and Tláhuac​ preserved the chinampería. Therefore, it is one of the main tourist destinations in Mexico City that attracts both Mexican and foreign visitors.
With the purpose of contributing to the conservation of the lake environment, UNESCO proclaimed the chinampas of Xochimilco as cultural heritage of Humanity in 1987.
The declaration has been in danger of being lost on two occasions due to ecological deterioration due to the advance of urbanization.
