A march calling for action against violence targeting women spiralled into confrontation on the streets of Paris as feminist and anti-immigration factions turned on one another. Police formed tight lines to keep the groups apart while boos, chants and accusations filled the air. Members of Collectif Nemesis were escorted along the route amid backlash over their claim that foreign nationals are "over-represented" in sexual violence cases. Other feminist groups condemned the remarks, pasting “Nemesis = Fascist” signs onto shop windows and accusing the group of distorting the issue. The clash unfolded as demonstrators waved flags, held placards and argued over the roots of violence against women in France, where official data shows women make up the overwhelming majority of victims of intimate partner abuse.
